Best Survival Tomahawk

Tomahawk for survival

Tomahawk is a North America specific small axe type commonly used by Native Americans. They were mainly use as hand to hand close combat weapons or as a throwing weapon. But they can be used as general purpose tools as well. Tomahawk are also known as hawks. Tomahawk is similar to a hatchet except it has a spike or a hammer opposite the blade and generally lighter than a hatchet.

This tool is a popular choice among campers. They are very useful in camping and bushcraft scenarios mainly because of its' multiple uses. It can be used as a cutting tool, hammer, demolishing tool or as a combat weapon. Spike on a tomahawk will come handy if you want to break stones etc.

Buying a Tomahawk

You will have to consider few different fractures when it comes to selecting a tomahawk. First of all you need to find the type of steel been used. American steel, High Carbon Steel(1060,1070,5150) 420 stainless steel, Anodized AUS-6 (2CR13) stainless steel are all good choices.

Secondly check on the way the head was made. Drop-Forged and differentially heat treated, hardened heads are the best. Differentially heat treated tomahawks has harder edge and a spike than the middle making a shock resistant body.

Throwing tomahawk as a game

Tomahawk throwing is a increasingly popular sport among Americans. This is a combat or hunting skill native Americans had. In modern day we use techniques used by them in this sport. There are many competitions organised by knife throwing groups where tomahawk throwing is a category.

A throwing tomahawk should have a handle of 16 to 20 inches, a forged blade with curved edge and a sharp spike. Selecting a hawk weighing less than two pounds is advisable. You should give some special attention to handle as well. The handle of a throwing hawk is more break-prone. So going for a steel handled one like Estwing BLACK EAGLE or Smith & Wesson SW671 is recommended.

Most throwing is done at a minimum distance of 12 feet, so you can start at that distance if you are new to this sport.

Combat Tomahawk

When it comes to close combat a tomahawk can be a devastating tool. It can be used both as a defensive tools and as a attacking tool but if you are not experienced enough your enemy can use your own tool against you. As there are two sharp sides opposite to each other one side may always be pointing at you when you are defending. So when you are selecting a fighting tomahawk you have to think about that too.
