you might be wondering, Yes you do!

Survival Can Opener

P 51

P-38 openers are legendary.

It was the one mostly used by the military. Mostly every soldier has a story about their p38 and how it saved their life. That is one of the reasons why it was once mentioned as militarys' best invention. Origin of this type of can openers goes back to 1942 . Subsistence Research Laboratory of Chicago was given the challenge of inventing a special can opener after many solders complained about the key opening system came with Army’s K-ration. The challenge was to develop a can opener which is easy and fast to use, small and easy to carried while keeping the cost to minimum.

P-38 was first issued in 1943 to US military during the World War II as part of a ration item known as the Hospital Five-in-One. Later it was issues with G-ration, K-ration and C-ration. P-51 is the larger version which came in to popularity later on. Although p38 openers are no longer given to US militants, p51 is still in use, it's given with canned bulk meals called Tray Rations. It's even used in disaster recovery efforts to the date. Rescue organisations use P51 can openers to give away with canned food items. These army issue can openers were occasionally called as John Wayne by Marine Corps, after he was shown using a p38 to open a K-Rations on a training film.

Why it's called p38 or p51

  • The P38 measures approximately 38mm
  • The P51 measures approximately 51mm
  • There is a fighter plane called Lockheed P-38 Lightning
  • And another fighter plane called P-51 Mustang
  • It takes 38 punctures to open a standard can with P38 (38 Punctures, P-38)
  • And it takes 51 punctures to open a larger can with a P51 (51 Punctures, P-51)

However origins of the name p38 or p51 remains mysterious; whether it is based on the length, the plane, or number of punctures it takes to open a can

A Survival Can Opener with many uses

There are many uses of a camping can opener other than opening your cans.

  • icons
You can use it as a screw driver as well if needed.

  • icons
It can even be used as a cutting edge, as a groove, as a cleaner, to clean finger nails etc

  • icons
to open battery compartments, to cutting tape on boxes, as a cutting string, to scratching the corrosion off something, to clean muddy boots, to open letters, to strip wires, to sharpen pencils, to open cardboard boxes.

Keep it handy at all times!

A Survival Can Opener will have less use if you don't have any caned food (or any cans for that matter) to open. But if you are not keeping a supply of caned food items you run the risk of been helpless in a survival situation. A hurricane, ice storm, thunderstorm, an earthquake ...who knows what might come-up. So be ready for any situation and pack essential food items including canned food on your basement. When you do that don't forget to include a P51 or a two with your cans. It will work in any condition, it doesn't require any power source other than some human power. These are pocket-sized, it doesn't take much space and can be taken anywhere you go.

A p51 or p38 opener work well on any size of can rim. It will be really useful when you are out of power. If you get caught in a hurricane or a thunderstorm without power this tool may become very handy.

With it's added length p51 is easier to use. It takes less time to open a can with a p51 than a p38. With it's smaller size P38 is a must have in your emergency survival kit, key ring, tackle box, bug out bag or even in your dog tag chain.

These things were developed for army, it is a guarantee that they are truly good survival tools.
